SHETTLESTON HOUSING ASSOCIATION
WHERE IS IT? On Pettigrew Street in the Shettleston district, far east of the city centre
One of Elder & Cannon Architect’s newest buildings, the design won them the 2010 RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.
The design involved restoring and renovating the red sandstone Co-operative Hall, as well as adding the striking, modern extension to its side. While the extension’s frame matches the elevation of its older neighbour, the deliberate stark contrast between them avoids any attempt to integrate the buildings, as is often the case in new architectural design. The pairing of old and new is apt, given the work by the Shettleston Housing Association to provide affordable homes, through new builds or renovation of old.
