THE ICON BUILDING
WHERE IS IT? On Clyde Street facing the River Clyde, just behind the St Enoch Shopping Centre
Built in 2005, Elder & Cannon’s Icon Building certainly carries a sense of character; the outer zinc cladding and angled roof conjure up memories of the giant sand crawlers operated by the Jawas in Star Wars.
To say that the 12-storey structure sticks out like a sore thumb would be a bit of an understatement, rising far taller than its neighbours. Containing 52 flats plus retail space on the ground floor, it was the first in a series of planned buildings along the waterfront. Future proposals for neighbouring buildings by other Glasgow architects such as Page & Park, gm+ad and RMJM will hopefully give the building a more inclusive feel, while still retaining its own identity.
